About Maitland, FL

Maitland is one of Central Florida’s oldest cities and is steeped in history. The city is a suburb of Orlando that was founded in the early 1800s. It was once considered Fort Maitland by the U.S. Army. As the years went on, railroads and new construction were built. In 1959 the city’s name was changed from Lake Maitland to simply Maitland. Maitland had a huge growth spurt in the 1970s when Disney World came to Orlando. Many of the homes in Maitland were built during this time. Located just 15 minutes north of Orlando, Maitland is a great choice for those who need to commute to work. The SunRail commuter train runs right through Maitland.

The residents of Maitland protect the historic character of the city. A historic corridor through the city highlights homes that were built in the late 1800s. Lake Lily Park is home to one of the historic houses which is now a museum. It’s also home to Maitland’s Farmer’s Market. Other lakes you can enjoy include Lake Maitland with exclusive estates and waterfront homes along its shores. The lake is perfect for paddleboarding and kayaking.

Schools in Maitland are part of the Orange County Public School District. It’s the 4th largest district in Florida and boasts excellent graduation rates as well as top scholars as graduates. Nearby cities include Winter Park to the south, Lockhart to the west, and Altamont Springs to the north. The Orlando International Airport is about 30 minutes away.

If you’re looking for a peaceful walk, make sure to stop by Lake Lily. Follow the paved path around the lake for the perfect nature break. Step back in time when you visit Maitland’s Enzian Theater, Central Florida’s “only alternative cinema offering independent, foreign, and classic films.” It’s also home to Florida’s Film Festival. Maitland City Centre is a luxury mixed-use development in the downtown area with upscale apartments, restaurants, and amenities like a fitness center, a rooftop dog park, and an outdoor lounge. Try the popular Houndstooth Kitchen & Eatery for hand-crafted sandwiches and soups. The Audubon Center for Birds of Prey is a must-see in Maitland.
